Sometimes you need a level at an exact spot: a step, a drain, the top of a kerb. Placing Ref Point puts reference points on point cloud surfaces in Revit with one click each.

Why place reference points on point cloud surfaces
- Exact spots. Calculate Surface measures on a regular grid. Placing Ref Point adds the extra points the grid misses, such as ridges, edges and low points.
- Any view. It works in 3D views at any angle, plans and sections. A section box is not needed.
- Ready to use. The points are ZetaRefPoints, so Floor, Roof and Topo By Points can use them straight away.
Steps
- Open a view where the point cloud is visible.
- Click Placing Ref Point (Zeta BIM tab › PointCloud Tools).
- Click on the point cloud. A ZetaRefPoint is placed on the scan surface under the cursor, the one nearest to you.
- Keep clicking to add more points, then press Esc to finish.
Using the points
- Shape a floor with Floor By Points, a roof with Roof By Points or a toposolid with Topo By Points.
- Check levels: select a point to read its elevation in Revit.
- Move a point if needed; it is a normal family instance.
Good to know
- The ZetaRefPoint family is loaded into the project the first time.
- If no point cloud is visible in the view, a message asks you to show or insert one.
- Remove the points before delivery with Cleanup ZetaBIM Data.
FAQ
Do I need a section box?
No. Click wherever the scan is visible; the point lands on the scan surface nearest to you.
