Face Section Box: Box Any Element and Look Straight at a Face in Revit

Face Section Box: Revit section box aligned to a face

Rotated elements are hard to inspect in 3D: the standard Revit section box is always aligned to the project axes. Face Section Box fits a Revit section box around an element, aligned to the face you pick, and turns the view to face it.

Face Section Box aligns a Revit section box to a face

Why align the Revit section box to a face

  • Tight box. Only the element and what is around it stay visible, including the point cloud.
  • Aligned to the element. Angled walls, skewed beams and sloped roofs are boxed along their own direction.
  • Straight view. The view looks straight at the face, which is ideal to compare the model with the scan.

Steps

  1. Open a 3D view.
  2. Click Face Section Box (Zeta BIM tab › Manager).
  3. Pick a face of the element.
  4. The section box is set and the view turns to look at that face.

How the box is oriented

  • Vertical faces (walls, sides of beams): the box stays upright and faces the picked side.
  • Sloped or horizontal faces (roofs, floors): the box follows the slope of the face.

When to use it

  • Checking a wall against the scan. Box the wall, look at its face and compare it with the point cloud behind it.
  • Inspecting a skewed beam or column. The box follows the member, so nothing else gets in the way.
  • Preparing a screenshot. A tight, straight view of one element is clear in reports and in Model Check.

Good to know

  • If the 3D view is locked, a message asks you to unlock it first.
  • Use the view’s Section Box setting or Reset Section Box in Revit to go back to the full model.
